Leighton Braunstein Mind Map

Why spell BRIJ that way

Be Ofentik
(aka Be Authentic)

“Everyone needs someone to help them BRIJ to the top.”
– Leighton (aka L8N) Braunstein

The inspiration for the name came in 2021 as I was brainstorming on one side of my whiteboard and my 1st grader, my mini-me, pretended she was doing the same on the other side.

She asked me for words to write…..and when I saw how she spelled bridge, it was a moment of inspiration. Spelled as B-R-I-J, MY go-to analogy now had even more meaning…. the term not only incorporates my initials but also the middle initials of everyone in my family.

What Drives Jamie Braunstein?

Be Optimistic

“Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, you could shift your focus to everything that could go right”
Unknown
I’ve always been a problem-solver… even when that means thinking outside the box.

Especially when it means thinking outside the box.

When you’re tasked with driving transformational initiatives at multi-billion dollar companies and building detailed business cases to justify multi-million dollar investments, you’ve got to think outside the box. And it’s not enough to be a problem-solver; you need to be an efficient problem-solver.

Over the past 18 years, I’ve worked with companies ranging from small startups to huge brands like Disney and ESPN.

I’ve:
=

Modeled business cases to support multi-million dollar investments

=

Reorganized operations teams to maximize resources

=

Reinvented business-critical teams’ cultures

=

Developed a plan to affordably deliver ESPN TV to mobile phones

=

Created customer relationship management visions

=

And I launched my own performance coaching business.

No, I’m not a robot or some kind of superpowered decision-making AI. I’m an optimist. Whenever I find myself facing a challenge, my instinct is to find the logical silver lining. No matter what, there’s always a silver lining…but sometimes, you have to shift your perspective to see it.

In every role I’ve held, I’ve helped people shift their perspectives and find silver linings. Even in roles that didn’t directly involve coaching others, I coached. I’ve been a sounding board, a liaison, a strategizer, a negotiator, a consultant, and a change-driver.

So if you want an outsider’s perspective on a challenge you’re facing, if you’ve got some ideas you need help turning into goals and plans for reaching them, or if you’re having a tough time seeing the silver lining in a situation, reach out. I’m here to help.

Jamie’s Journey

Be Tenacious

“Don’t blame, take responsibility; Don’t wait, take action; Don’t complain, create solutions; Don’t hope, prepare.”
– Jamie Braunstein
Over the past two decades, I’ve found myself in a lot of situations I never imagined I’d face. I’ve been in the financial management, sales operations and strategy spheres with companies large and small, startup and well-established. With my ups have come the downs: reorganizations, business shutdowns, layoffs, “inheriting” more responsibilities, sleep deprivation, devastating losses, leadership changes, you name it!

Throughout these ups and downs, my resilience and optimism have been my superpowers. No matter what I find myself facing, my natural instinct is to find the situation’s logical silver lining and pursue it, turning any possible setbacks into wins.

Read on to learn more about my journey. Click on each heading to read about a chapter that shaped me. You’ll probably notice something in them—I love quotes. So I included a quote with each chapter that sums up how I felt in the moment.

Working Hard, Playing Hard

I never dreamed about success. I worked for it. – Estee Lauder

Sports came easily to me and I only wanted to get even better….tennis, basketball, golf, softball, football…you name it. I loved the teamwork. I loved to practice. I loved to win. There was even something special about losing…..it drove me to be better…..it inspired me to work harder.

I didn’t just love winning in sports. I wanted to make my parents, my teachers and myself proud when it came to school. It helped that I love to learn, to be involved and to challenge myself! My parents taught me how important it is to work hard in school, so I busted my butt studying…and ended up graduating near the top of my class!

A Dream Didn't Come True

I’m just going to flip this omelette here. Aaannnnnnnddddd…. I’m having scrambled eggs. – unknown

Duke was my dream school: great school, great sports teams, great campus, great people and great weather. I worked so hard to get in…and then I didn’t get in. It hurt to admit defeat and it hurt even more when I realized, deep down, my mom was right. She wanted Emory for me since the beginning….even when she knew I wanted Duke. Aren’t mom’s always right?!

When Strangers Become Allies

Do it now. Sometimes later becomes never – Unknown

I was about to graduate Emory’s Business School (Goizueta), move back north and start my career. Knowing business was my destiny, I pursued Investment Banking roles. The interviews were back in NY, so I flew home many weekends. On my flights, I was head down reviewing my story, the banks I was applying to, and finance concepts. Then I thought of a question only a banker could answer. And I really wanted an answer.

I walked into first class and looked for a young business person, shockingly (or not!) I found someone quite easily! I not only got my question answered, but I found a mentor. First, he gave me tips that helped me nail the interview and get the job with UBS. And just a year later he changed my life.

About to Quit

You have to fight through some bad days to earn some of the best days of your life – Unknown

My first job out of school was in investment banking. As the forward thinker I am, I saw this as the perfect foundation for a career in business. I knew I’d eventually shift to the corporate side; it was just a matter of when.

Who knew the person that I randomly met on one of my flights from ATL to NYC (who happened to be an investment banker!) would be my path, or should we say BRIJ, to my dream role? (More about that after the next quote.) But, for now, let’s be clear: the dream role didn’t come without a struggle.

In banking, it was long days, short nights and intense training. By Year 2, I was on the brink of quitting. I didn’t know how to process that: I’m not a quitter, but I’m also not illogical. I found myself asking what was more important: life or money?

In The Zone!

Never underestimate your ability to make someone else’s life better — even if you never know it. – Greg Louganis

As I search for the next opportunity, I reconnect with the man I’d met on that ATL to NYC flight. He’d left banking and started working at ESPN…then six months later, asked if I wanted to join him there as an analyst. Sports, digital media, financial modeling, strategy, startups of Disney….it was too good to be true.

You can probably guess where this story is going…

My Dream Job

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful – Albert Schweitzer

In my first decade at ESPN, I repeatedly demonstrated my talent (and love!) for crunching numbers, seeing the big picture, and optimizing financial and strategic oversight. My passion for problem-solving and track record of producing measurable results didn’t go unnoticed. In my 5th promotion, I became the Director of ESPN’s Mobile and Digital Video division, a role in which I supported many impressive GMs and department leaders in a CFO-like capacity.

I LOVED what I did. I did it well. And I was rewarded by being asked to work on so many start-ups with uncharted waters – mobile licensing, on demand digital video, smart TVs, mobile TV, WatchESPN, iPhone applications….the list goes on! There was nothing like helping to set the precedent for how to define digital strategy, create new revenue streams, optimize forecasts that crossed multiple departments, and (re)negotiate unique cost structures.

One of my most Cherished Relationships

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. – Robert Breault

Seemingly out of nowhere, my parents split up. I was my mom’s rock and my dad’s little girl. As neutral as I thought I could be to maintain both relationships, there was just too much involved to live out the vision I had. Relationships hit rock bottom and it was a life lesson for sure. The silver lining, (since there always is one!), it forced me to let down my guard, be vulnerable and realize I was ready to settle down.

Making Dating my Job

If the problem can be solved, why worry?  If the problem cannot be solved, worrying will do you no good. -Shantideva’s

The goal-setter in me recognized I was ready to find the right husband.

A friend and I made a pact: we’d both go on 10 dates per month starting in 2009. We got detailed—lunch dates were allowed, online dating was allowed, the only requirement was that we made all 10 of those dates.

And get this—it worked 🙂 We both met the men who would eventually become our husbands. Of course I fell for the one that refused to follow my lunch date only rule. It was dinner only in his book.

A Champion Is On the Way

Be strong, you never know who you are inspiring – Unknown

Just days after losing my dog (aka Peter, aka my handbag-sized buddy!!) to brain cancer, I received the biggest news of my life….I was pregnant! Isn’t it magical how the world works sometimes?

It was only a few days until my flag football team’s championship game. I was the star wide receiver (lifelong sports gal, remember?) There was no way I was missing the game. Just as strongly as my husband felt about me not playing, I felt that I could play. Needless to say, I played.

We won! As my oldest daughter likes to put it, she won a football championship before she was even born!

Playing a Roster's Worth of Positions at Once

Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow – Robert Kiyosaki

Over at ESPN, things are going swimmingly. I’ve got my maternity leave plan set up, I’m preparing to be out for a few months…and then, my go-to person, the one who was going to hold down the fort during my leave, gets a job offer she just can’t refuse.

I understand. I would have done the same thing. You gotta focus on what’s best for you.

But that meant now I had to ramp things up just as I was planning on slowing them down. I couldn’t let anything fall to the wayside, and I spent those last few months pulling long hours at the office, getting to know the cleaning staff (to the point that Stella, our floor’s cleaner, knitted hats and clothing for my daughter, Leighton, when I came back!!) and building up the team to ensure they could excel while I was out.

Was I crazy enough to leave ESPN?

A comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there – Unknown

I’d been in finance for 10 years. I’d developed, launched, and pivoted businesses. I was a working mom. I was happy. I was comfortable….or was I ready for a new challenge?

Quietly, I confided in my mentors that for the first time ever, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go next. I debated leaving ESPN, the company I’d called home for years, the place I thought I’d retire from. I looked at roles outside ESPN, outside finance even.

I was about to leave for a Sales Ops role….then, fortuitously, a Sales Ops role opened up at ESPN. I became the Senior Director of Sales Enablement for ESPN’s Global Business Operations, overseeing the company’s ad sales processes and models to identify improvement opportunities and facilitate transformation.

The Salesforce Journey Begins

Wake up with determination. Go to bed with satisfaction. – Unknown

Next Journey: Bring Salesforce to ESPN! What started as an idea in 2015 became a rock-solid case by 2016.

I’ll never forget that executive meeting where I presented the project and the resources it would take to execute. I’d spent hours preparing my presentation, only to get it approved after just seven minutes!

My instinct was to keep presenting my case, but I heard one of my best mentor’s voices in my head: “Take the sale, Jamie. Take. The. Sale.”

I heeded my mentor’s advice and took the sale right then and there. Step 1 of Mission Salesforce was complete!

Two Births

Each one of us can make a difference.  Together we make change.  – Barbara Mikulski

By 2017, the Salesforce implementation was well underway, as was my second pregnancy. I had two babies due the same month: my second daughter and my “work baby,” Salesforce going live.

I’m a big believer in “teamwork makes the dream work,” because that’s exactly what happened in 2017. When I took time off for my daughter’s birth, my dream team and the dream team of my remarkable partner on the Technology side, stepped in and handled Salesforce like the pros they are.

Would you believe one of the proudest moments of my career happened while I was on maternity leave? This also became one of my biggest lessons as a leader. If you define a clear vision, bring together talented people, inspire those people to believe in the vision and instill a culture of transparency, trust and communication…. you can step back and trust the TEAM to make things happen!

One of My Most Fulfilling Accomplishments

Anything is possible when you have the right people to support you – Misty Copeland

One of my dreams for the ESPN Sales Team was to create one-click access to 10 years worth of revenue data by advertiser, agency, time period, industry, etc. The Sales Leadership team could tell I was determined to make this a reality and, though it had been a project attempted time and time again over the years, they agreed to give it one more go. They supported the steps to bring together the handful of people (people I call geniuses!) who knew the nitty gritty details that went into cleaning up the customer data.

The day this product launched was one of my most fulfilling in my time at ESPN. Not only was the Sales Team able to see multi-year revenue trends by the click of a button in Salesforce, but we now had legit processes, systems, and people in place to keep the data clean moving forward.

Everything is Changing. Is This Still the Place for Me?

Even when we can’t control the situation around us; we always can choose where we direct our attention – Liz Stanley

Just when things were finally coming together from my perspective, Disney decided to restructure.  No longer would the ESPN Sales team operate separately.  Disney, the owner of ESPN, saw an opportunity to go to market as a portfolio of brands: ESPN, ABC, Disney, FX, Nation Geographic, etc.  It became a period of rapid and massive restructuring.

The world I worked in, the role I had, the problems I was solving – it would all change.  Leaders I loved—many of whom were my champions—were getting promoted and some moved on to pursue other opportunities.  Suddenly, it wasn’t the same workplace I’d grown to know and love.  It wasn’t bad, but it was very different and so much bigger!

Meeting the Future CEO of Disney

Discuss. Debate. Decide. Align. – Jimmy Pitaro

To add to the change, ESPN got a new CEO, Jimmy Pitaro. I’ll NEVER forget listening to him speak to a huge ESPN crowd. I was enamored. His charisma, his optimism, his philosophies stuck with me. He even agreed to meet me in person. It was one of the most influential 1×1 meetings I’ve ever had. My vote is for Jimmy as CEO of Disney!

One thing Jimmy said that’s stuck with me since was, “Discuss, Debate, Decide, Align”. I live by this philosophy, It’s foundational to creating successful and healthy teams. It’s what I kept reminding myself of when I became the Senior Director of Sales Operations for Disney’s Ad Sales Division after the major reorganization across all Disney sales teams.

Bigger Than I Ever Imagined

In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take – Lewis Carroll

I decided I was ready to leave ESPN. I explored new opportunities. I spoke to mentors. I took calls from recruiters. I set on my new mission, the mission to find a place for Jamie. Funny enough, a recruiter called me about a Vice President of Commercial Operations role at A Place For Mom.

The job had so much of what I was looking for. An amazing new boss. A heartfelt mission. The backing of 2 major PE Funds. Super aggressive growth targets. An impressive, proven leadership team. An edict to revamp systems and processes.
I was impressed by everyone I interviewed with. I took the job. I was pumped for my next chapter!

A World Turned Upside Down

It’s when we step back from a single brush stroke that we can see the whole painting – Tamara Levitt

Adapting, adjusting, and assessing who I am amid a global pandemic

I was leading an amazing team, working with some of the smartest people I’ve ever known.

It was 2020, and you know what happened that March. As I entered a new era of my career, COVID wasn’t the only thing making me reevaluate where I was in life. Between new demands on my time, a shocking economic downturn and the reality that I now had two kids looking up to me, I realized something had to give.

BRIJing The Gap

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change – Jim Rohn

I knew something needed to change. I wanted to coach my girls’ sports teams. I needed to sleep. I needed to be more present with family and friends. I wanted to keep working with inspiring, driven people. I wanted to share so many of the best practices I learned over the years. I wanted to help small business owners make their dreams a reality.

In 2021, BRIJ Consulting was born. I began advising start-ups and small companies looking to scale their business, operate more efficiently, grow revenue, and improve returns.

Following My Passion

Dream big. Start small. But most of all start. – Simon Sinek

After a year of consulting, I realized I was constantly drawn to driving organizational health, more fulfilled leaders and overall alignment of the business. I realized that one of the core components to driving exponential business growth is driving its people’s growth. The happier the people are, the more productive and effective they can be.

No matter what role I’m in, I’m always coaching. That’s just who I am. And through working one-on-one with consulting clients, I realized coaching is where I shine the brightest.

While I continue to offer my consulting services, coaching is becoming a bigger and bigger part of my business. Even when I’m consulting, I’m coaching. When I work with a consulting client, the very first thing we do together is determine their vision and goals.

And once there is a vision, I go into Macgyver mode. I immediately start assessing the resources they have available and calculating ways to use those resources to BRIJ vision and reality. So if you’re looking for someone who’ll shift your perspective, help you leverage what you’ve got, and find realistic solutions to the challenges you’re facing right now, let’s talk.

And Jamie’s Ultimate Goal…
